Information

The need for the program was determined from comments from previous seminar participants and from malpractice insurance statistics.

Goals

This seminar is based on actual malpractice cases. All cases are real, although the names of the primary parties have been changed. Risk management principles will be derived from the cases. After each case presentation, the liabilities inherent in that case will be analyzed, and relevant risk management principles will be presented.

Objectives

  1. Analyze a case scenario to determine whether it meets the criteria for malpractice.
  2. Identify five sources of error in the emergency department.
  3. Discuss four communication factors that often contribute to malpractice cases.
  4. Analyze four case scenarios to determine whether an EMTALA violation took place.

Target Audience

This seminar is appropriate for physicians of all specialties who are interested in practical ways to reduce the potential for malpractice liability.
