Rounds Series 206: Obstetrics and Gynecology

Risk Management Rounds: Obstetrics and Gynecology
5 CME One Credits toward AMA Physician's Recognition Award

Information

The need for the program was determined from comments from previous seminar participants and from malpractice insurance statistics.

Goals

This seminar is based on actual malpractice cases. All cases are real, although the names of the primary parties have been changed. Risk management principles will be derived from the cases. After each presentation, the liabilities inherent in that case will be analyzed, and the relevant risk management principles will be presented.

Objectives

  1. Discuss how communication with patients helps improve care and prevent lawsuits.
  2. Apply principles of informed consent, implied consent and informed refusal in a variety of clinical situations.
  3. Document patient care in a manner that reduces the risk of medical errors.
  4. Explain how the doctor-patient relationship is formed and terminated in special circumstances, including contractual relationships, supervisory relationships, emergencies, coverage and on-call situations, and informal consultations.
  5. Recognize the OBG's duty to third parties such as spouses and sexual partners.
  6. Recognize risks associated with specific procedures such as sterilization, and conditions including genetic and congenital issues, prescribing for pregnant patients, birth videos, breast cancer and ectopic pregnancy.

Target Audience

This seminar is designed for physicians specializing in obstetrics and gynecology who want to sharpen their risk management skills specifically related to those areas. A basic understanding of risk management and malpractice is assumed.

This seminar was authored by Rosemary Gafner, Ed.D.
